US troops, along with other Allied troops, land on the beaches of Normandy, France. This was part of Operation: Overlord. 63,360 were either killed or injured in this attack. My Great-Grandpa Manenti fought in this battle.

The US lands on Iwo Jima, a volcanic island south of Tokyo. US troops take the island and raise an American flag on top of Mount Surbachi.

The United State and Japan fight at Okinawa, Japan. 12,513 Americans were killed and 38,916 were injured. This was one of the last battles between the United States and Japan during WWII.

The USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by Japanese and sunk in 12 minutes. Survivors were spotted by aircraft several days later on August 2nd.
