    The California Gold Rush

    The Gold Rush begins. This is a huge event that brought many Chinese people into the United States because they had hopes of finding gold and becoming wealthy. This was mainly in the West Coast of California, and these immigrants were able to secure employment in the mines. Many came over as indentured servants.

  • The Page Act of 1875

    This act was yet another act directed towards Asians that prohibited the immigration to America. It was passed under the guise of keeping immoral people out of the country, especially women.
  • The Chinese Exclusion Act is Passed

    The Chinese Exclusion Act is Passed

    This act prohibited Chinese immigrants from coming into America and limited their eligibility to get jobs and gain citizenship. This led to many Chinese-Americans moving to Chinatowns within cities. This act was created because of the depressed economy and blame being set on the increased Chinese employment.

  • Tape v. Hurley

    Tape v. Hurley

    This case was between a family and the school district because their daughter was denied the ability to attend school because of her race. The court ultimately ruled in the Tapes' favor, and it has changed the terms towards race and education towards the future.

  • The California Land Law Act

    This prohibited many immigrants from owning land which further implemented the housing gap between races that is fueled by discrimination. This made it more difficult to live in America as an immigrant.
  • The Immigration Act of 1924 is Passed

    This act further restricted immigration into the United States from countries in Asia, especially China and Japan. This left many people without jobs or homes because of the attempts to escape poverty or politics. It also finished off the dwindling amounts of Chinese immigration.
  • Pearl Harbor is Bombed

    Pearl Harbor is Bombed

    This was a huge mark in Asian assimilation because it created a wall of distrust and accusations towards Japanese people. This also led to many people with any Japanese heritage to go into camps similar to concentration camps.

    Japanese Internment Camps

    Following the actions at Pearl Harbor, anyone with Japanese heritage was taken to live in internment camps for the extended period of time. This was an extreme form of discrimination and segregation because people who were proven not to have any relations to the events at Pearl Harbor were still held by the government for no reason. They were forced to live in extremely harsh conditions.
  • The "Model Minority" Concept is Introduced

    The "Model Minority" Concept is Introduced

    This concept referred to the stereotyped belief that all Asians were obedient, passive, and intelligent. It also regulated the though that Asians were able to make a good living out of a bad situation because of the internment camps. This created a negative relationship between Asians and other groups because it painted them as inferior and even Black people were labeled as problematic.

  • The Refugee Act of 1980

    The Refugee Act of 1980

    This act aided in finding people who were deemed refugees homes in the United States. It especially helped Vietnamese refugees who were seeking ways to escape politics in their country.
