My uncle Binky had been paraplegic before I was even born. He learned to navigate though life with doctors telling my granny he wouldn’t make it past 10 years. They were wrong, he lived for almost 30 years as a paraplegic. I would begin so see the little nurse in me from time to time, as I would help him when I could. I would even so much of as watch nurses perform their daily tasks with him. A nursing home allowed him to get bed sores and getting a nosocomial infection. He passed due to this !

My mom has been a nurse for as long as I can remember. I was into writing love notes to my friends and family, so my mom received a special one from me. Stating “someday me and you will work in the same hospital one day”. She started my inspiration and still is !

I enjoyed the thought of being a nurse someday so I joined health academy. I loved learning about healthcare and the experiences the program showed me.

I knew I wanted to go to college so I could finish off my pre-requisites. Where that was I had no clue until 6 months before graduation. COVID put a lot of restrictions on things so no prom, no senior trip, and even thought no in person college for me :(
-
So exciting ! I was accepted and received a scholarship to the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Where I would be a student athlete focusing on my nursing classes to hopefully get into the nursing program.
-
Throughout high-school I always found schooling to be easy until I started taking pre-requisites. I struggled with not only being a fresh college athlete but also studying for the first time in my life. Besides it being hard I loved labs, they were my favorite !

For many years I wanted to go to and HBCU, that dream came true. I was to further my nursing career and athletic career at Winston-Salem State University. This became home ! My nursing professors were the best in helping me actually understand the content.
-
I finally got into my first nursing focused class, where I learned skills and experiences I never have before. I learned how to do manual BP, insert an intermittent catheter, and even how to make a bed with a patient in it. I loved this class and the professor I had.
-
This was the saddest day of my life, my GPA was good, all my pre-requisites were done, what could it be ? and why :( I found out in front of friends that had celebratory poppers waiting to celebrate me. It all came down to how my transcripts were transferred and there was nothing anyone could do about it.
-
I kept pushing and pursued my minor to get my Bachelors degree. I graduated with my Bachelor’s of Arts in Psychology and had senior night for a game I had played all my life !
-
I never knew nursing programs would be even more competitive than what I was dealing with in North Carolina. I started applying and applying to many schools to constantly get denied or be put on a waitlist.
-
My mom’s co-worker told her about a school in Murrieta and at this point we will try anything. My mom and I took a trip down to the school to focus my steps moving forward. The staff was so welcoming and made me excited. So excited I denied a tour because I knew it would eventually be home.
-
When you graduate everyone’s first question is “what are you going to do next”. This was so easy for me to answer, I will be your next future nurse however that looks moving forward.
-
I took my entry Hesi exam Friday and started school that following Monday. It was one of the best days of my life and all I could do was Thank God ! Through his timing of getting denied, waitlisted, and stressed out he made it all happen within one weekend.
-
This couldn’t have been the most perfect school for me ! I truly had the best professors I could ever ask for. Through their teachings, warmheartedness, and strength I seen my first steps in becoming the most competent nurse.
-
Clinicals had such a big impact on me because for months I was reading, studying, and or practicing new skills. I was finally able to see it all come together with real patients. I had so many compliments on my abilities and resilience, which furthered my confidence in being a future nurse.

My first semester of the BSN is going just the way I wanted it too. I love learning from different points of view and this is giving me that !
-
Even though lots of people are saying it gets harder, I couldn’t be more prepared ! I’m excited to continue my journey.
