    Europeans spread DISEASES!

    When the Eurpean people immigrated to Canada, they brought along many diseases that were embedded in their ethnic origins. The most significant disease was smallpox. The diseases killed of half of the Huron tribe.
  • Confederation

    Confederation
    Canada is created. Many different provinces came together to form one big country called canada. Some of the reasons leading up to confederation was that after the civil war the British colonies did not want to have anymore wars. So they thought that If they formed one big group that had one strong government in charge of them all that it would prevent any further wars.
  • Bison nearly extinc

    Bison nearly extinc
    From 1870-1880, the Europeans harshly hunted down the Bison. The Europeans killed off the majority of the Bison Herds, almost to extincton. The First Nations throughout Canada relied on the bison as their main resource. They used literally every piece of the animal and never put any part to waste. for example, they had 45 (mentioned) different uses for the hide alone!
  • Treaty 1 established

    Treaty 1 was an agreement between Queen Victoria and the First Nations living in the southern Manitoba area. This treaty included both the Chippewa and Cree tribes. It's also the first Treaty ever created.
  • The Indian Act

    Indian was the word the Europeans used to describe The First Nations, even though they were aboriginal, not indian. The Act was created simply define who qualifies as an "Indian", and the reserve systems to which they were to be located....out of the way of the Europeans.
  • Treaty 6 established

    This treaty covered First Nations tribes in the Central Alberta and Saskachewan area. First Nations living in there included mostly the cree.
  • Treaty 7 established

    The Candian monarch signed this treaty with several tribes in the Southern Alberta area, such as the Kainai Nation (Blood), Pikani First Nation (Piegan), Siksika Nation (Blackfoot), and the Tsuu T'ina Nation (Sarcee).
  • Residential Schools

    the government took the First Nations children and put them into schools that taught them the ways of European culture. They basically told the kids they weren't aloud to speak their oun language and that they had to learn the ways of the Europeans.
  • Treaty 8 established

    This treaty, signed between the Canadian Monarch and several tribes in the Northern Alberta area, included the Woodland Cree, Dunneza (or "Beaver") and the Chipewyan.
  • The Indian Act Revised

    The Indian Act was changed to limit coverage of the Native people. If you were a Native women, but married to a none native man, you were no longer included in The Indian Act.
  • Canada Act

    Ending British power to legislate for canada, making Canada fully independent. The Canada act also contained a formula for it's amendment in Canada, a subjest that ruined attempts to get people to agree on a new constituent from as far back as 1927.
  • N.W.T. aboriginal language officially recognised

    N.W.T. aboriginal language officially recognised
    The North West Territories Aboriginal Language plan got to work at trying to stengthen the aboriginal language. they had visions goals and statagies for trying to get residents and the government of the North West Territories to use the Aboriginal languages. the plan recognised and supported the resposability for language that is shared between indaviduals, familys, language communities, governments and the bigger society. they believe they needed to support the aboriginal language.
  • Indian Act Ammended.....AGAIN!

    Indian Act Ammended.....AGAIN!
    At this time, The Indian Act was changed to allow Aboriginal women the right to keep their status after marrying non-native men. They were also allowed to grant the Native status to their children. Not to mention the non-native women who had married Native men (who gained the Native status), lost the Native status as it was supposedly just.
  • Last Residential School closes

    Last Residential School closes
    Atlast the final Residential School closes. Aboriginal people were no longer forced into these schools where they were to become "civilzed people", or converted to christianity, Realize that at these schools they were forced to be protestant, even after the Charter of Rights and Freedoms was enacted.
  • Indian Act - Final Ammendment

    Indian Act is ammended yet again give to right of voting to band members living off reserve in band elections and referendums.
