    The term "belly dance" was invented by Sol Bloom (entertainment director of the Chicago World Fair) who constently referred to it as "danse du ventre" which directly translates to belly dance. Although there were dancers in Philidelphia in the 1870's it wasnt popular in america until 1893.
  • The Texas Tommy

    The Texas Tommy
    The Texas Tommy is said to be the first swing dance. It orginated in San Francisco and was popular in The Thalia, the largest and most popular dance hall on the Pacific coast.
  • Jazz Music

    Jazz Music
    Jazz was invented by African Americans in New Orleans during the 1910's. It quickly spread all around the United States and was liked by both whites and blacks.
  • Blues music

    Blues orginated in the deep south invented by African Americans. Blues developed from a mixture of traditional African music and European folk music. First it was popular in Afrirican American communities then progressed into white communites as well.
  • Acro Dance

    Acro Dance
    This type of dance combines classical dance techniques and acrobatic elements. It emerged in Canada and the United States as an act in the Vaudeville (circus type preformance). The dance movements in acro are founded in ballet, jazz, lyrical and modern dance styles today.

    Originated in the Southern United States in the 1920's consists of ballads and dance tunes usually in a simple tune. Although it started in the 1920 it didnt gain much popularity until the 1940's. Some country music in the 40's and later fused hillbilly country, gospel, jazz, blues, pop, cowboy, and folk.

    Named for harbor city Charleston North Carolina. Dance was made popular by the tune "The Charleston" by James P. Johnson. It was mainly popular in the late 20's. The dance is mainly done as either a swing or a tap dance.
  • Lindy Hop

    Lindy Hop
    Inveted in African American comunities of Harlem, New York. Very Similar to the Charleston, the Breakaway, and the Texas Tommy. It was A popular swing dance from the late 20's to 30's.

    Derives from the term popular although the modern form developed in the 1950's and 60's the term was first used in 1926 which then "pop" music was blues, jazz, country, and hillybilly music.
  • Swing Music

    Swing was developed in the early 1930's and was very popular by the 1940's. The music was mainly played with brass instruments and sometimes a few string instuments. between 1935 and 1946 is when swing was at its peak.
