Slavery in the Americas

  • Slavery Introduced

    A Dutch vessel arrived with a group of twenty captured Africans. They were sold and slavery was born.
  • Period: to

    1619-1820

    The time of slavery being introduced to the Americas to the time around it ended.
  • John Punch

    After being captured running away from his indentured servitude, John Punch became the first documented slave for life.
  • Child Slave Laws

    Virginia declared a child to be free or bound based on the condition of that child's mother. This was a condition adopted into their state code.
  • Royal African Company

    The English government established the Royal African Company. This was a result of an increasing need for slaves.

    1680-1750

    The growth of slave populations in states. Slaves grew to occupy 40% of Virginia, 70% of South Carolina, 8% of Pennsylvania, and 4% of New England in this timespan.
  • Slave Trials

    Separate courts were established for slave trials, thus depriving them of an ammended right to have a trial by jury.
  • Slave Laws

    Slave laws were codified. They were now an official thing.
  • Slaves' Liberty March

    A band of slaves marched down a road, led by an Angolan man named Jemmy, shouting "Liberty!". This was done to break away from their lack of freedom. This resulted in slaves losing many rights that they previously had.

    The British colonists were completely invested in slavery. Most slaves important were sent to work plantations.
