  • End of Slave Importing

    Economic, social, and political event. Slaves could no longer be imported.

  • The Compromise of 1820

    Social and political. Missouri was set as a slave state and Maine was set as a free state to keep the Senate balanced, slavery wasn't allowed north of Missouri.

  • The Wilmot Proviso

    Social and political. It would unbalance the Senate by making more free states.

  • The Compromise of 1850

    Political. 4 pairs of resolutions were presented. They separated all of them and each compromise was eventually accepted.

  • The Fugitive Slave Act

    Economic and social. A benefit to slave owners that contained penalties for running away and helping people run away. They continued to do help anyway.

  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Social. A story about the horrors of slavery seen by Harriet Beecher Stowe.

  • The Kansas Nebraska Act

    Political. It separated the Whigs into pro and anti-slavery. The anti-slavery parties became known as "Republican"

  • Bleeding Kansas

    Social and political. Kansas was the first place where battle had occurred between those for and against slavery.

  • The Caning of Charles Sumner

    Social and political. Charles Sumner was attacked for giving a speech about being anti-slavery.

  • The Dred Scott Decision

    Social and political. Slavery became more immersed in politics. The Supreme Court was against government prohibiting slavery.
