Significant Historical Events 1929-1945

  • Farmers Dust Blow

    Farmers Dust Blow
In Southern Alberta, many farmers were struggling, they were faced with the issues of the dust blow, destroying crops. This event was caused by the fertile soil in the Prairies becoming dry and was not being taken care of properly. The condition of this was as though it was a desert. You were hardly able to see anything but big clouds of dust across the countryside and it was also very difficult to breathe through, farmers were unable to grow crops. Farmers during this time lost a lot of money.
  • Continuity and Change

The dust blow continued for a very long period of time but this event took very big toll for farmers since it lasted a very long and as they had to face a number of other issues as well. Many farmers and families who relied on their land to grow crops had to abandon their farms for their own safety. Overtime things did get better and the farmers were able to recover from the loss and damage that the dust blow costed them but the damage was very costly. By 1939, agriculture was finally recovered.
  • Women during The Great Depression

    Women during The Great Depression
More women joined the work force in 1930 due to the cause of the great depression in order to provide for their families during this time of need. With men losing their jobs and the amount of unemployment of single men during this time, women's increase in employment and the impact of job opportunities for younger women increased as well. During the depression, men applied for the position in working for packing lines but mostly women were employed but they were paying them at a lower wage.
  • Continuity and Change

During this time period, there was a lot of up and downs for women. As we see women had much more employment during the depression and after the depression, women were the main source of workforce at the home front for the war but later on were forced to stop working after the war since they were not needed. There was change since many more women had jobs but their was still certain things that women were not allowed to do, they just gained more opportunities but had limits.
  • Workers Unemployment

    Workers Unemployment
In 1933, almost 30 percent of the work force was gone in Canada due to the horrific event of the great depression as manufacturing companies came to a realization that they had no more goods that could be bought or sold to consumers because of the amount of people who could not afford anything during the time of the great depression, many were laid off and let go from their jobs. Many became homeless and were unable to provide for themselves and their families, it was a time of stress for many.
  • Continuity and Change

For workers during this time, they were in need and struggling so the government had deiced to put these young individuals in relief camps far away that were run by military. There was some progress for this group as they were being feed and they did have jobs that paid but as we learn, the idea of the relief camps were not the best and many of these workers felt forgotten in society. These individuals were still very poor while in relief camps, The outcome for this group was not good until WW2
  • Continuity and Change

After a long period of time in these relief camps, workers started to feel forgotten as time went on and wanted things to change. These workers created a plan to travel to Ottawa to speak to the Prime Minister in hopes for change. They did so and nothing changed as they held many protests and police arrested the leaders who were in charge of these riots.Later on after the outbreak of WW2, much work was heavily needed for the war and many of the workers got their jobs back in the end.
  • Workers in Relief Camps

    Workers in Relief Camps
In 1934, our Canadian government had decided to create relief camps to those who are struggling and unemployment due to the great depression. These camps were very controversial, the people attending these camps had a place to sleep, food, water a job that pays but not very much but these camps were placed far away and they were run by military. With very strict rules, these things were all put in place for a reason as the government was scared of these people going after the government.
  • Farmers Increase of Production in WW2

Farmers Increase of Production in WW2
In 1943 the federal government created a very powerful agricultural food board for the purpose of bringing together all production of food in a single programme in preparation of the second world war. Due to this farmers and their families grew wealthier but steadily there became a shortage in labor as many farmers went to war or found better jobs in the industry. Thankfully there was temporary help from harvesters, students and even prisoners of war helped with these shortages.
  • Continuity and Change

During the war periods agriculture production increased a lot as it was very important and essential thing necessary for war. While many things over the years stayed the same with agriculture, many ways and techniques have stayed similar, the impact of the second world war changed many things and a produced new technological boom for agriculture research and machinery. This boom did not create revolutionary technology but it expanded on discoveries after the war in production of agriculture.
  • Women during WW2

    Women during WW2
In 1944, there was a significant increase in the number of women in the workforce, with 1 million women working due to the number of men who left their jobs to join the armed forces during WW2, without women taking control at the home front, we would have not been successful in the war. There was lots of propaganda for women to rejoin in the workforce and many women worked in more heavy industries. Along with all their hard work, women were given a significant opportunity to join the military.
  • Continuity and Change

Many women were given some great opportunities due to WW2, getting jobs, being able to join the military but after the war women were forced to quit their jobs and they were fired since they were not needed anymore once the war was over and women who joined the military were looked down upon and did not get to fight on the front lines with men. There was a major change for women during this time period but they still did faced sexism and were not fully able to have the same opportunities as men.
