Canadian coat of arms

Significant Events in Canadian History

  • Treaty of Versailles

    Treaty of Versailles
Who: German Reich, Canada, British Empire, France, Italy, Japan & USA
What: One of the peace treaties at the end of WW1
    When: 1919
Where: Hall of Mirrors, Versailles, France
Why: It ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers.
  • Treaty of Versailles

    Treaty of Versailles
Why is this significant to Canada?
Canada had little impact on the final shape of the treaty, but Sir Robert Borden led a successful fight for separate Dominion representation at the conference and separate signatures on the treaty. I think that if this event never happened, Canada would probably still be at war right now, and the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers would probably still be going.
  • End Child Labour

    End Child Labour
    Who: Children of Canada
What: The end of child labour
    When: Up to 1929
    Where: Canada
Why: Children could work for free
How: Mines and Factories would employ children for free
  • End Child Labour

    End Child Labour
Why is this significant to Canada?
I think it is a significant event because it prohibited children employment in jobs under the age of 18 if working at dangerous jobs. Everyone should be treated equally, including children. I think that if this event never happened. Canada would be different because there would be children working instead of being in school. We wouldn't have all the stuff we have today if child labour didn't end.
  • The Dieppe Raid

    The Dieppe Raid
    Who: Canada, Germany, United Kingdom
What: An Allied attack on the German-occupied port of Dieppe on the northern coast of France.
    Where: Dieppe, France
    When: August 19, 1942
Why: Wanted to destroy coastal defences, port structures and all strategic buildings.
How: Seize and hold a major port for a short period
  • Dieppe Raid

    Dieppe Raid
Why is this significant to Canada?I think that this is significant to Canada because it was the first time that the Canadians fought directly against the Nazis, on land. I think that if this event never happened, Canada would have more people, because of the 5,000 Canadians who took part in the raid, only about 1600 got back to England. The rest were either killed or taken prisoner.
  • Italian Campaign

    Italian Campaign
Who: United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, British India, New Zealand, Union of South Africa, United States, Kingdom of Italy, Poland, Brazil, Greece, Free French, Germany
What: To capture the German and Italian forces
    When: July 1943 - May 1945
    Where: Italy
Why: They wanted to continue their advance against the German/Italian forces.
  • Italian Campaign

    Italian Campaign
Why is this significant to Canada?
This is significant to Canada because Canada organized their home defense and their active military early in the war and their troops were sent to England. Italy was the first opportunity that the Canadian forces were able to be used in large numbers in order to demonstrate their fighting ability. I think that if this event never happened, Canada wouldn't have been recognized as an important part of the Allies.
  • D-Day

    D-Day
Who: United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Free France, Poland, Norway, Australia, New Zealand, Netherlands
What: The landing operations of the Allied invasion of Normandy, in Operation Overlord.
    When: June 6, 1944
Where: Normandy, FranceWhy: To end WWII and the Nazi domination of Europe.
    How: Invasion on Juno Beach
  • D-Day

    D-Day
Why is this significant to Canada?
This is significant to Canada because Juno Beach was the beach Canada was to invade, and both the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division and the 2nd Canadian Armoured Brigade were the leading formations. Also, this was the success of the landings, as revenge for the disaster at Dieppe. I think that if this event never happened, Canada could have been under German domination, and Canada wouldn`t be as it is today.
  • Suez Crisis

    Suez Crisis
Who: Israel, United Kingdom, France, Egypt
What: Offensive war fought by France, Britain, and Israel against Egypt
    When: October 29 - November 6, 1956
Where: Gaza Strip and Egypt (Sinai and Suez Canal zone)
Why: Britain and France issued a joint ultimatum to both Egypt and Israel
  • Suez Crisis

    Suez Crisis
Why is this significant to Canada? This is significant to Canada because Canada's resolution of the United Nations Emergency Force put a stop to a possible world war, and it was Canada's first peace keeping mission.
I think that if this event never happened, Canada wouldn't have put a possible stop to the war, and it could have escalated into a world war.
