Ken McCoy is out and about in Shanghai, China right after New Years. He is carrying a knife with him for self defence even though he, as a Marine, is not allowed to be armed. Two Italian Marines assault him. Out of self defence, he stabs and kills both of them.

"Killer McCoy" is confrotned by Captain Banning on his murder of two Italians. Banning urges McCoy to plead guilty. McCoy insits he does not. He eventually wins this argument and get sent on a one-time espionage trip to prove is worth in the Marine Corps. He is required to go on the next convoy to the Japanese base and photograph their military equipment. He completes the task wonderfully.

Captain banning and Sessions have a discussion as to realease McCoy, promote him, or let him go. They end up promoting him to Corporal and giving him a new line of duty.

McCoy is sent on new orders to keep him from killing more people. He is now responsible for driving Missionaries and other supplies in Studebaker trucks.

Corporal McCoy has an afair with Ellen Feller, the Reverand's wife. Deep down he knows this can screw up his career forever. McCoy, however, cannot keep from such a beautiful woman like her. Suprisingly, he never gets in trouble for this.

McCoy and the Christian Missionaries were on their way back to the Embassy when they were ambushed by Chinese bandits. None survived of the Chinese.
