    This election was one of the causes of the civil war because every candidate had a different goal.Abraham Lincoln was part of the republican party and his goal was to not end slavery but stop the expansion of it.John bell wanted to completely keep the union, and Stephen Douglas was gonna handle slavery through popular sovereignty.
