    Missouri was added as a slave state and Maine was added as a free state, creating a balance. A line was drawn 36°30°. It was a way to balance slave states and free states, this lead to civil war due to sectionalsim and cutting the u.s in two pieces.

    Treaty of Guadalupe hidalgo
    Over 500,000 square miles were put into slave states and the free states were scared the slave states are going to start taking over all of their land.
  • The Fugitive Slave Act

    The Fugitive Slave Act
    Punished people who harbored runaways with both civil penalties and criminal penalties including a 6 month imprisonment if prosecuted successfully. South complained that northern state laws interfered with the federal system. The north did this to protect the black people of being unfairly accused of being runaways. Ultimately the fugitive crisis is one of the major causes of the coming of the civil war.

    This led to the anger of the southern government because they felt they were under fire and being forced to be non slave, so it started a debate in the government's between south and north.
  • John Brown's Raid

    John Brown's Raid
    The raid of Harper's Ferry was a raid on a weapons armory in VA by John Brown to try and start a slave revolt. Brown took some hostages and persuaded black slaves to rise up and fight back with him. The revolt was quickly put down because no large amounts of slaves rose up. This was a cause of the civil war because it showed that North would resort to violence to end slavery, scared the South into wanting to secede, and the South also began to militarize in case of further attacks by the North.
