School Nutrition Program Timeline

  • National School Lunch Act

    The National School Lunch Act was est. in 1946. The program provides children with nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches each day school day. The program is federally assisted, and offered to children for free with family incomes lower than 130% of the poverty level. Children with family incomes between 130% and 185% are eligible for reduced-price meals.
  • Special Milk Program

    The Special Milk Program was inaugurated in 1954. The program provides milk to children in schools, child care institutions, and eligible camps that do not participate in other Federal child nutrition meal service programs. The program also reimburses the schools and institutions for the milk that they serve. The program offers free milk to low-income children.
  • School Breakfast Program

    The School Breakfast Program provides cash assistance to states to operate breakfast programs in schools. It was made permanent in 1975.
  • The United State Department of Agriculture (USDA) Department of Defense (DoD) Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program

    The USDA DoD Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program allows schools to use USDA Foods entitlement dollars to buy fresh produce.
  • Let's Move!

    Let's Move! was devoted to solve the problem of obesity. The program was created in 2010, and focuses on giving parents information on healthy choices, providing healthier foods in schools, allowing families to have access to healthy, affordable food, and helping children become more active.
  • Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act

    The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act focuses on improving child nutrition. The act made reforms to the school lunch and breakfast programs by improving nutrition of children.
