    Johann Gutenberg
    Gutenberg created the printing press which was very revolutionary for Europeans. It allowed the ability for Europeans to learn how to read, thus creating more literate people. Plus, the ability to have your own copy of a book, such as The Bible, allowed easier access to religious infomation. This helped spread religion in Europe and the New World.

    Reconquista
    Reconquista: Castile and Aragon armies carried out a holy war against Southern Spains independent states that had been captured by the Muslims. The reconquista caused the formation of conquistadores, whom came to the New World and helped colonize America.

    Treaty of Torsedillas
    The Treaty of Torsedillas divided the world. Lands discovered on the west side belonged to Spain while Brazil was the portuguese side.This caused tons of colonization in Southern America, but it also encouraged future endeavors for English , Dutch, and French exploration.

    John Cabot and Sebastion Cabot
    Before Englands interest in the New World declined, John Cabot finished the first recorded transatlantic voyage by an English vessel. He was searching for a northwest passage to Asia. When he died his son Sebastion continued his father's work in the Hudson Bay region. When the English wanted to colonize the Americas, the discoveries by Cabot were used to claim American territory.

    Protestant Reformation
    Protestant Reformation was enacted because King Henry VIII wanted to divorce his wife. Elizabeth I, his daughter, also helped form a strong central administration. When Elizabeth ruled she felt that there was no reason the England shouldn't participate in the wealth of the New World. This helped colonization of the Americas because many moved to the New World for money purposes and ended up staying.

    Encomienda system
    The encomienda system: Indian villages were given to the conquest leaders by the monarch.When the villagers did labour they were rewarded with legal protection and religious guidance. This helped the colonization of America by rewarding North American Indian land to those who lead conquest, causing more people to want the reward of land.

    Slave trade
    The result of encomienda was the slave trade of Indians. When a tribe was taken over the Indians were forced to work of the leaders and slaves were often sent to Europe to work as well. Slaves did not survive well in Europe causing the need for more slaves, until eventually most Indian tribes were wiped out. Many moved to the Americas in order to paricipate in the slave trade.

    Roanoke was the first attempt for the English to create a colony, but due to the location the colony ultimately failed. Yet it was the first strive to the want of having a stable colony in the New World. The Spanish prevented the colony from contacting the English and vice-versa. The villiage eventually just disappeared for an unknown reason

    Richard Haklyut
    Richard Haklyut published accounts of European explorers who went to the New World. This influenced many to want to go over to the America causing lots of colonization. Haklyut created the image that America was for England and that caused issues further down the road, but without this England most likely would have lost all interest in America.
  • Jamestown

    Jamestown
    A charter was issued by a man named James and it was authorized by the London Company. And it allowed him to establish plantations in Virginia. Three ships sailed to America with 104 men on each ship. When they arrived they built their fort in a spot where they felt they would not get attacked. When the colony was starting to fail, Captain John Smith came to the town and straightened the place out. He helped the colonists survive.

    Jacques Cartier discovered a water way in the New World, that he thought may lead up to China. But his quest for China failed so he went back home. Many years later Samuel de Champlain resettled the region that Cartier discovered and he named it Quebec.

    Sir Edwin Sandys began to help transform virginia into a profitable enterprise. Sanys created the House of Burgesses to make the colony seem better to more wealthy people. Also before Jamestown, Britain needed to make money so they used the joint stock company to help create money for people.

    William Bradford was the founder of Plymouth. The Pilgrims got aboard the Mayflower and intended to go to Virginia but ended up at , whar would later be know as, Plymouth So they created the Mayflower Compact, which was an agreement between colonists, saying that they would come together and create a civil colony.

    Originally the colony was just a work place for people to get paid. But eventually the colony started to grow

    Cecilius wanted to create a place for all the unwanted Catholics, so he helped colonize Maryland. He also wanted to make a lot of money out of it too. But soon Protestants and Catholics were living together very well.

    Connecticut was created because of Massachusetts Bay. Representatives from the town created The Fundamental Orders, which was a blueprint for civil government.

    Roger Williams founded the providence of Rhode Island and later on Anne Hutchinson took her followers to Portsmouth. This colony was formed to create Religious toleration. Nobody could be persecuted for what they believed.

    John Winthrop was a puritan who was the govenor of Massacusetts Bay. This colony was a colony of Puritans, puritans were a very religious group that wanted to remove all vestige from Catholicism.

In America the Great Awakening was started by Johnathan Edwards, a minister. George Whitfield was a preacher who went around and preached to crowds of people and inspired them to practice religion like it once was practiced.
