The Burundian President and President Habyarimana (The President of Rwanada) are both killed when their plan was show down as it was trying to land at Kigali Airport. It's believed that the attack was caused by Hutu extremists. -
The Rwandan army and Interahamwe militia start their mass killing of Tutsis, UN failed to help out. 10 UN peacekeepers are shot and killed.

The RPF (Rwanda Patriotic Front) begin a major offensive attack to end kllings & they rescue 600 of their troops from the Arusha Accords in Kigali.

The UN lowers it's level of forces to 270 troops. The International Red Cross believes the death toll could be over 100,000.

The UN Security Council delivers a new solution explaining that 'acts of genocide may have been commited'. UN also agrees to send in 5,500 troops to defend civilians but they are delayed because the UN and US have disagreements on how to finance this operation.

Arguments about deployment still continuing, the UN allows an emergency force of 2,500 French troops to create a 'safe' area in the government-controlled part of Rwanda. The killing of Tutsis continues in the 'safe' area even though the French are there.

Refugees running away from the RPF move to north-western Rwanda & flood into Zaire. About 10,000 refugees per hour cross the border into the town of Goma. The massive entrance causes a severe humanitarian tragedy, as there is a lack of food, water & shelter for them. -
The RPF states that the war is over, decide on a truce and choose Faustin Twagiramungu as prime minister and Pastor Bizimungu as president.
