  • Belgian Colonists Arrived

    When the Belgian colonists arrived they created cards that identified people. Your card would either say you were Hutu or Tutsi.
  • Hutus get mad

    The Hutu start to get really mad. Lots of riots started to break out. They want to get rid of the Tutsi because they think they are better than them.
  • Arusha Accords

    In 1993 the Arusha accords were agreed apon. This opened up the government positions to both the Hutus and the Tutsis. This caused were tension between the two ethnic groups.
  • After the killing

    After the killing of the president people got mad. It triggered a campaign of retribution. Leaders of political opposition were killed, and slaughter of Tutsis began. Everyone joined into the killing.
  • President Killed

    On this date the Rwandan President Juvenal Habyorimana (a Hutu) was killed when his plane was shot down above Kigali airport. A French judge blamed Paul Kagame but he denied it and said it was a Hutu who did it in order to provide them with a reason to take out all the Tutsi's. This event lead to violence across communities.
  • Massacre at Gikondo

    Lots of Tutsis are killed at a Catholic Church. This was the first obvious sign that the Hutu were after the Tutsi and the genocide was starting.
  • Another massacre

    Another massacre occurs at a different Catholic Church were more Tutsis are killed. Many killed by grenades, others by machetes. After this many more killings occurred and many Tutsis and Hutu were killed.
  • Hutus fleeing

    Tons of Hutus (almost I million) start to flee the country and go to Zaire. This was to get away from all the violence and get somewhere were they can be safe.
  • Genocide ends

    Genocide ends
    The Rwanda genocide comes to an end when the RPF is able to gain control of the country. Many were killed during this genocide and even to this day there is still problems between the Tutsis and Hutu.
  • How many killed from April to July 1994?

    Between these times 80000 Rwandans were killed in a time span of 100 days. Most people dead were Tutsis and the Hutus did the killing. Some Hutus were killed during the genocide as well if they were trying to help the Tutsis.
