Road to the Constitution

  • Quartering act

    Quartering act
Parliment passed the Quarting Act to basicly enforce unpopular policies in America. The Americans had to let the British soldiers stay in their homes, feed them, and give them the basic necessities of a home. This was widely opposed by the Americans because they didnt have a choice if the soldiers stayed there. Americans felt that their right liberty was being violated.
  • Townshend Act

    Townshend Act
The townshend Act was to assert imperial authority in America, to show Colonists that Britain was still in charge. It taxed glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea. The Colonists were annoyed that Britain was putting taxes on goods that they used so regularly.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
The Boston massacre only resulted in 5 deaths, all were Colonists. A group of British soldiers came to relieve another unit, and were met by a taunting croud of Bostonians. The captain of the relief unit ordered "don't fire" but the soldiers open fired, and killed 5 Colonists.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
3 tea ships docked in Boston refused to leave the harbor until they were payed the tax owed on the tea. The Colonists didn't want the tea because they were still being taxed on it. So a group of Colonists dressed up as Native Americans and dumped all the tea into the harbor. This was one of the first organised protests against royal Britain, and resulted in the intolerable acts.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
These were the 5 harsest acts Britain had passed by far. 1. Boston Port Act - this shut down the Boston port, which was a major source of income for the people of Boston. 2. Quartering Act. 3. Quebec Act - Quebec could have a civil govt, and freedom of religion. 4. Massachusetts Bay Regulation Act - banned all town meetings that were not approved by the royal governer. 5. Impartial Admin of Justice Act - the royal governer could move trials anywhere.
