King George sends troops to guard the Appalachian mountains to prevent conflict. -
Cause 2: Proclamation of 1763
Who issued it: King George Who did it affect: Colonists When: 1763 What did the Proclamation do to the colonies?: It made it so the colonists couldn’t buy land west of the Appalachian mountains. How is this a cause that led to war?: This led to war because the colonists weren’t happy they couldn’t move to those lands since they had fought for them. Another reason this caused war is because it made the colonists feel they were being controlled by the British and they didn’t like that. -
Cause 3: Sugar Act
When was it enacted: 1764 How did it affect the colonists? It placed more taxes onto the colonists. How is this a cause that led to war?: This led to war because the colonists didn’t like the new tariffs being enforced. This led them to forming the Committees of Correspondence so that they could communicate easier -
Cause 4: Stamp Act
When was it enacted: March 22, 1765 How did it affect the colonists? It required all paper documents to be printed on stamped paper. How is this a cause that led to war?: This led to war because the colonists protested the act. They protested it because they saw it as a way for Great Britain to make money off them. -
Cause 5: Quartering Act
When was it enacted: March 24, 1765 How did it affect the colonists? Required all colonial governments to provide lodging and food for British troops. How is this a cause that led to war?: This led to war because the colonists did not feel like they should have to provide lodging and food for the troops. They also didn’t like the new taxes and wanted to have representatives in the British parliament to help vote on these types of acts. -
Cause 7: Boston Massacre
Who: British soldiers and colonists Where: Boston When: March 5, 1770 What happened and why: The rebels were protesting the British soldiers and then the British open fired on the colonists. How is this a cause that led to war? This led to war because it united the colonies even more against the British. The loyalists in the colonies still supported the British after this creating propaganda for them. -
Cause 6: Tea Act
When was it enacted: May 10, 1773 How did it affect the colonists? This made it so the British could sell tea directly to the colonists. How is this a cause that led to war?: This led to war because the merchants in the colonies couldn’t sell tea any more. Also the Sons of Liberty threw tea into the Boston harbor as an act of rebellion. -
Boston Tea Party
Who: Sons of Liberty Where: Boston When: December 16, 1773 What happened and why: The Sons of Liberty dumped 342 chests of tea into the Boston harbor Outcome/effect: The dumping of the tea showed the British that the colonists were going to fight to retain their rights. -
Cause 8: Intolerable Acts
Who: King George Where: Boston When: March 24, 1774 What happened and why: This was 3 major acts. The Boston Port Act which closed the Boston harbor to imports/exports until the cost of the tea dumped was paid back. The Massachusetts Government Act which placed Massachusetts under British control. The Quartering Act which made it so British soldiers could be housed in a colonists house for free. How is this a cause that led to war? These made the colonists mad so they formed a militia.
