Road to Revolution (Up to 1766)

  • Treaty of Paris

The French and Indian War has ended. The English has won. The Treaty of Paris has been signed, and the Ohio River Valley is now England.
  • Period: to

    Pontiac's Rebellion

The Native Americans were not happy with the British Rule. The British treated Native Americans like pests and treated them badly. A Native American called Pontiac rebelled. Many joined him in this war. Britain signed a diplomatic solution, due to an incredible debt, and a solution was reached.
  • Proclamation of 1763

A government regulation made in 1763 that doesn’t allow colonists to pass the Appalachian Mountains, because Britain could not control or protect the colonists if they went that far. Colonists were not happy about this since they wanted that land they fought for, for economic opportunities.
  • Sugar Act

Tax on sugar, win and coffee. Made to counter smuggling and make more profit to counter their debt. Colonists still didn’t like that because the Molasses Tax already existed. An example of government regulation affecting economic opportunities. The result of this is more smuggling and a worse relationship.
  • Stamp Act

. Made to raise revenue for the British. It only really affected the rich, educated white men in the colonists. The colonists did not like this and threatened the tax collectors. The influential people began to organize beginnings of colonial resistance. The Virginia House of Burgesses made it so Parliament could have the right to tax, and this inspired other colonies to do the same.
  • Quartering Act

Colonists had to be hospitable with soldiers and give them shelter and food and alcohol. Made to prevent smuggling and it was cheaper for Britain. Colonists were furious.
  • Virginia Resolves

The Virginia House of Burgesses made it so Parliament couldn’t have the right to tax. Inspired other colonies to act as well. They did this because they didn’t like the tax.
  • Period: to

    Stamp Act Congress

The Congress sent letter to government petitioning tax. Meetings inspired minor rebellions (protests, refusing to pay taxes, attacks on tax collectors). Due to this, the stamp tax was not enforced.
  • Repeal of Stamp Act

When the British Parliament removed the Stamp Act due to continued attempts by colonists. This proved to colonists that they could make change if they tried hard enough. It also brought about a sense of unification.
  • Declaratory Act

Shortly afterwards the repealment, the Parliament made a law saying "We can tax you."
  • Period: to

    Townshend Acts

Multiple acts made by Charles Townshend that taxes: lead, glass, paper, paint, and tea. The effect of this was a boycott, mainly the Daughters of Liberty, that boycotted dresses and clothes from England. They made their own homespun clothes. This boycotting led to more soldiers being sent, leading to an increase in tension as well.
  • Boston Massacre

5 colonists killed in a "massacre" at a drunken bar fight. This event was a source of major propaganda for the Patriots, this wasn't really a massacre though, the Colonists made it out to be.
