  • Navigation Acts

    The Navigation Act was a law put on the colonists saying: -They were only allowed to trade with Great Britain
    -Taxes will be added to goods
    -British had the authority to search ships without a warrent at any time This caused colonists to be angry because it put them at an economic disadvantage due to limited trade and an increase in tax. This also caused the colonists to smuggle items due to Great Britain searching ships.
  • Great Awakening

    Colonists believed that material possessions were beginning to replace spiritual values. They felt as though they were losing touch with their religion. They were determined to save the Native Americans. They opened colleges used to train and convert ministers. Churches in America overall become more democratic. Colonists being to question the authority of the British government and they believe that the government is not protecting their 3 natural rights.
  • French and Indian War

    This is a war between the British and the French over land competition and other tensions. After the British won, the colonists were given all land east of the Appalachian Mountains, and the Spanish to the west. This causes the colonists to lose their access to the Ohio River Valley, and lose all trade past the mountains. This puts the colonists at an economic disadvantage. Also, due to war debt, the British put many taxes and acts on the colonists creating tension.
  • Sugar Act

    This tax is meant to lower the taxes from molasses act and decrease smuggling. The British added an indirect tax into the cost of sugar. The British also set up custom houses, which are allowed to search ships whenever and whoever they please. This causes the colonists to begin smuggling even more, and also causes tension in the colonies due to mistrust and anger.
  • Stamp Act

    The British placed this act on colonists and it adds a direct tax on all printed goods such as newspapers. This caused the colonists to feel as though their rights were being violated and caused tension with the British.
  • Townshend Act

    The British repeal the Stamp Act. This new act places a tax on glass, paint tea and more. Similar to the Navigation Acts, this Act gives restrictions on who the British can and cannot trade with. This money is used to finance troops in the colonies. It is repealed at 4 years.
  • Boston Massacre

    British soldiers supposedly shots at colonists, although it is still unclear who yelled "fire." John Adams defended the British Soldiers in court, and they were found not guilty. This angered colonists because they believed the soldiers were guilty. This caused a large amount of tension and was a major turning point in the push towards independence.
  • Tea Act & Boston Tea Party

    The Tea Act is the British Colonists putting a tax on tea for the colonists and puts the British East India Co. in danger. The sons of liberty assemble to react to this. They dress up as Native Americans and dump 1-5 million dollars worth of tea into the Boston Harbor in an act of protest. This causes an increase in British troops in the colonies causing tension.
  • Intolerable Acts

    The British place the Intolerable Acts on the colonists following the Boston Tea Party. This Acts, shut down Boston Harbor, takes away their right to self govern, gives British the right to go back to England for a fair trial, adds a second quartering act, and extends the Canadian boarders. These Acts are the Colonists final push towards independence due to the British having so much control over them.
  • Lexington and Concord

    A colonial militia was formed in Massachusetts. Paul Revere set up spy networks to warn colonists that the British are coming. This battle was later seen as an accident by the colonists but this was a major turn around point. The colonists were no longer being secretive. Lexington and Concord was a huge morale boost to the colonists due to their win.
