Tax Acts
Britain was in great dept because of the French and Indian War. They decided to tax colonists to pay off the dept. Since colonists asked for help during the war, Britain thinks it is fair for them to pay. They passed the Tea Tax, Stamp Tax, Navigation Laws, Sugar Act, and Quartering Act. -
Sons of Liberty and Daughters of Liberty
Men and Women colonists came together and organized a way to fight back against England for ignoring their document. They organized a boycott and got all colonists to not buy paper goods. The English economy was hurt by this and they repealed the Stamp Act. -
Stamp Act Congress
The Colonies created a congress and wrote down all their rights as Englishmen and the wrong things England was doing. They asked King and Parliament to repeal the Stamp Act. -
Declaratory Act
Parliament passed this Act the take control over Colonies. Stated that England had complete rule over the colonies and there was no such thing as self rule. This event started anger in the colonies. -
Townshend Acts
England passed a tax on glass, white lead, paper, paint, and most importantly tea. Colonists refused to pay taxes without representation and smuggled their tea. England sent in troops to stop this. -
Boston Massacre
Colonists were throwing snowballs and rocks soldiers. There was a fire in one of the home and one theory is that someone yelled “Fire” which the red coats thought meant to shoot. They open fired and the colonists killing two people. The first to die in this upcoming revolution was Crispus Attucks. The read coats were found guilty but were released with a punishment. -
Boston Tea Party
British East India Company was going bankrupt because of the boycott. British East India Company sneaked their ship into the colonies to sell their tea. Colonists heard about this and dressed as Indians and threw all the tea into the harbor. 342 chests of tea were thrown overboard. -
Intolerable Acts
England was angry and they closed the port of Boston until the damages were paid. England also put restrictions on town meetings. Also, New Quartering Acts were passed that gave soldiers the ability to walk into someone’s home anytime. -
First Continental Congress
Colonies sent 55 men and put their greatest thinkers together. They met in Philadelphia to address the bad things England was doing. They drew up a Declaration of Rights that states their rights, wrote to King and Parliament saying they are wrong and they aren’t taking it anymore and called for a complete boycott of British goods, non importation, non exportation, non consumption. -
Lexington and Concord
Parliament rejected Colonists and the Colonists were ready for a war. British commander sent troops from Boston to Lexington and Concord to take Colonist’s gunpowder and weapons. At Lexington, Colonists refused to back down and this was when the first gunshots were fired. Redcoats won this and headed on to Concord. At Concord Colonists hid and then ambushed the Red Coats. After this Battle British had won one and Colonists had won one. -
Declaration of Independence
The colonies wanted Independence from England and this document made it official. Written by Thomas Jefferson and signed by many other important officials. This document stated that the King interfered with the colonies right to self government and a fair judicial system.
