Road to Revolution

  • End of the war

The French and Indian war ends (also known as the seven year war) after 7 years. From 1756 to 1763.
  • Period: to

    Pontiac's Rebellion

When the French had to give most of their land to the British, the Native Americans were infuriated that they had to be loyal to the British instead of the French. A Native American chief decided to rebel, and a small war arose for three years between the Native Americans and the British.
  • Proclamation of 1763

After the war the Native Americans were revolted about the French losing most of their territory so the British government decided to draw the line of proclamation, which was a line the colonists weren't allowed to pass. The amount of land the colonists gained was very limited due to this line.
  • Sugar Act

The sugar act was an act that started taxing the colonists. To avoid corruption from the Molasses Tax that charged siz pence for each gallon of molasses imported, the sugar act only charged 3 pence per gallon of molasses. This tax made the colonists angry since they previously didn't have to pay any tax and now they had to pay the sugar tax.
  • Stamp Act

The Stamp Act was a tax put into any printed material in the colonies that was sold. Most colonists didn't like this and this lead to them threatening tax collectors and eventually, if they didn't leave their job after the threats, killing the tax collectors.
  • Quartering Act

The Quartering Act said that the colonists would have to house British soldiers whenever they would need - or want it. The host would have to pay the soldier's expenses and the soldier could stay for as long as they wanted.
  • Virginia Resolves

The decisions passed by the house of Burgesses to limit the power of the British on the colonies. They said the British couldn't control them on everything and they had to make their own laws.
  • Period: to

    Stamp Act Congress

A congress that lasted 18 days debating about the recently passed Stamp Act. This led to the conclusion of removing the act because of all the revolting in the colonies and the danger put into the tax collectors.
  • Repeal of Stamp Act

The parliament decides to remove the Stamp Act. No more tax is put to all printed materials that are sold.
