French and Indian War
The French and Indian War caused Britain to be in a lot of debt, so they had to begin taxing colonists. This rose tensions because the colonists felt like they weren’t a part of Britain because they didn’t have a voice in Parliament. The colonists had not been taxed before, and they didn’t want to start paying taxes. The colonists noticed that they ran the colonies better whenever they were under salutary neglect. -
The Proclamation of 1763
The Proclamation of 1763 restricted colonists from settling into the land they had just won, which was west of the Appalachian Mountains to avoid violence. Colonists felt like they sacrificed a lot for nothing because they had just won over that land during the French and Indian War. The colonists also didn’t like being controlled. -
Sugar Act
The Sugar Act of 1764 rose tensions between Britain and the colonists because this was the first tax the Parliament enforced on the colonists. This act affected all of the colonists because everyone needed sugar. They didn’t like being taxed especially because they weren’t even able to discuss the tax. -
Stamp Act
The Stamp Act of 1765 rose tensions between Britain and the colonists because many colonists that were lawyers and writers needed to use a lot of paper that now needed a stamp to send out due to this act. They thought that the act was unnecessary. -
Boston Massacre
The Boston Massacre rose tensions in the colonies because propaganda was formed through this event that angered colonists and made colonists hate the British even more. Many colonists believed that the British were the ones to blame in this situation, so they were outraged. -
Tea Act
The Tea Act of 1773 rose tensions in the colonies because the colonists feel like the British are trying to force the colonists into their beliefs because they lowered their tea prices and added taxes. This event shut down many merchants who lost their jobs because of the act. The colonists were outraged because some of them needed that job to support their families. -
Boston Tea Party
The Boston Tea Party rose tensions in the colonies because Britain started punishing colonists after they destroyed Britain’s property as a violent protest against the Tea Act that was enforced by the Parliament. -
Intolerable Acts
The Intolerable Acts rose tensions in the colonies because the colonists couldn’t bear the acts that were enforced on them as a punishment for the Boston Tea Party. This made the colonists start rebelling against Britain even more. -
Battles of Lexington and Concord
The Battles of Lexington and Concord rose tensions because this was the first official war between Britain and the colonists. -

The Olive Branch Petition rose tensions because it was the last attempt at compromise from the colonists to hopefully avoid the revolutionary war while preparing for war in case Britain declined.
