People were only allowed to follow the Church that England told them to follow. People that resisted were arrested or even executed. The Pilgrims traveled to the 13 colonies to escape the torture. They were kind and friendly towards the Native Americans and they started the first Thanksgiving. The Pilgrims were Separatists that wanted to escape religious persecution, so they immigrated to the New World and established Plymouth. They were free to worship and live out their beliefs.

Puritans also resisted the English church. They wanted to purify the Anglican Church and would punish people that opposed just like the English church. They moved to Massachusetts in 1630 to created their church there.

Anne Hutchinson stood up to the Purtains and told them that their way of forcing religion upon people was wrong. She was found dangerous by the Puritan leaders. They arrested her and was found guilty. This later caused more conflict and many other people agreed with her.

King Charles gave the Penn Family land because he owed them money. William Penn used this land in the 13 colonies to establish a colony for other Quakers, like himself, to live without fear of religious persecution. The Quakers believed that everyone had the light of God in them. They excepted people of all cultures which brought a lot of diversity to the Middle Colonies.

Every colony had a church except for Rhode Island and Pennslyvania. In the New England colonies, they made the official church the Congregational Church, and the South had the Church of England. The Virginia Bill of Rights gave people the free exercise of religion. This helped cut the ties of the church to the government. They could no longer control political matters and soon every state accepted this.
