  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    One of the legislative bills that were passed where part of the Compromise of 1850. It was a new version of the Fugitive Slave Act. Which helped get rid of the four year political confrotation between slave and free states. Clay introduced an omnibus bill covering these measures. Calhoun hated the plan and wanted the North to forget about their attempts to limit slavery.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    "Uncle Tom's Cabin" written by Harriet Beecher Stowe is an anti-slavery novel. Which talked about the vividly horrid problems of slavery to the North. The South believed it was an unfair depiction of the situation. But,still, the growth of abolitionist in the North increased.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    This act allowed for individuals to decided for themselves whether or not to prohibit slavery within their borders. The act served to repeal The Missouri Compromise of 1820. Which prohibited slavery north of the latitude 36 degrees 30' . This decision also caused the Whig and Democratic party to divide. Resulting in the formation of the Republican party.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    Boarder war consisted of numerous occasions of confrotations in the United States. Theaburpt battles were between anti-slavery(free state) and pro-slvery(boarder ruffian/southern Yankees). The pro slavery groups crossed the boarder in attempt to discourage Northerns for voting for a free state.
  • Lincoln/Douglas Debates

    Lincoln/Douglas Debates
    In 1858 Abrham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas had a 7part series heated debates. Linoln was against the expansion of slavery and wanted to keep it as it was. On te other hand Douglas believed in sovereignty. The south saw ths as a threat that slavery would be abolished.
  • John Brown at Harpes Ferry

    John Brown at Harpes Ferry
    John Brown (White Northerner) attempted a slave revolt at Harpers Ferry but was not successful. This assured the Southeners beliefs that Northerners would aid in a slave revolt against their masters. The South lost a feeling of security in the Union.
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
    Republican, Abraham Lincoln defeated Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge, Democrat Stephen A. Douglas, and Constitutional Union Candidate John Bell. Lincoln, being a supporter of the anti- spread of slavery movement brought fear to the hearts of Southerners. They felt like they had two choices either leave the union or be stripped of their institution
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    The United States Supreme Court legalized the right for slave owners to be obligated to bring their slaves into the Western territories. This affirmed Northerners as they believed this gave the South confidence to try to overrule and allow slavery evreywhere.
