  • Proclamation of 1763

    This proclamation did not allow colonists to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. The British government feaared the onflict between colonists and Native Americans would lead to another war. They also could not afford to pay British troops to defend the western lands. Colonists were enraged by this proclamation beecause they felt they had won the right to settle in the Ohio River Valley after winning the French and Indian war.
  • The Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act was the first time all colonists were taxed directly. The British put tax on trade and said the evrything to be shipped was to have a stamp on it. The colonists were angered because this was an example of taxation without representation.
  • The Repeal of the Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act was repealed after colonists protested, and objected to "taxation without representation." First, there was a petition protesting the Stamp Act. Then, there was a boycott of British goods. British merchants worried about continuing their trade in America. Eventually, Parliament repealed the Act in 1766.
  • Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre occurred when a group of British troops came across a group of rebels. They got into a skirmish and the rebels were throwing snow at the British troops. When someone was knocked down, they shot and no one really knows who shot first. Multiple people were killed. That was known as the first fight of the Revolutionary War.
  • Boston Tea Party

    The British King took away all tax on trade except on tea. So a group of rebles boarded a British tradeship and threw tea into the harbor. They said they did not want to damage anything but the tea so they could prove a strong, clear pointe to the British that they were mad about taxation without representation.
  • First Continental Congress Meeting

    The Continental Congress met in 1774 and all the colonies were represented with the exception of Georgia. The Continental Congress boycotted British goods. They They wanted the Intalerable acts to be taken away before they would unban all trade with Britain. They planned to posibly meet again if need be.
  • Common Sense

    Thomas Paine wrote Common Sense to help persuade people that departing from Britain was a smart idea. In Common Sense, Paine stated that he felt all monarchs were corrupt.
  • Declaration of Independence

    After the Continental Congress, a committee was formed to draft a "Declaration of Independence." Thomas Jefferson was chosen to write the actual document. Jefferson incorporated the philosophy of John Locke regarding the rights of people into the declaration. In the declaration, the colonies declared themselves to be independent. On July 4, 1776, Congress voted to adopt the Declaration of Independence.
