When Hitler became chancellor he didn't have very much power. When the Reichstag building was on fire, Hitler used it to get more power. Many articles of the constitution got suspended which meant that the Nazis could do almost anything they wanted because there was no rules

The Nazis made the enabling act which said that Hitler's decisions didn't have to go through anybody else. He could pretty much do whatever he wanted. If you didn't listen to or agree with Hitler, you would get punished.
