    Sanford B. Dole as president of the Republic of Hawaii

    -1890's Queen Liliuokalani, the native ruler, tried to take political power back from American land owners. In response AL overthrew the queen in 1893. Sanford B. Dole led the US to annex the island Dole worked to limit native rights in 1887 8 helped to overthrow the queen. When pres Cleveland refused to annex HI because of the planters actions in seizing power, Dole served as HI's pres. After the outbreak of the SA war, congress voted to annex HI in 1898

    After the explosion of the USS Maine and U.S. wanted European powers to remain out western hemisphere were reasons of war. Military actions happened in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Guam.
    The treaty of Paris was signed, U.S. gain the Philippines, Guam, and all Spain's colonies and Puerto Rico with exception Cuba. Do to U.S. win they became known as world power.

    The open door policy gave all nations equal rights when trading with china. The boxer Rebellion threatened the lives of foreigners living in china. An international army crushed the rebellion.

    Panama Canal

    American businessmen wanted to ship goods quickly and cheaply between the Atlantic and Pacific coast.
    The construction of its 51 mile length took 10 years (1903-1914) at a cost of thousands of lives and 400 million dollars.
    Panama was part of Columbia, the U.S and Columbia would negotiate but wouldnt agree to terms, panama wished to obtain its independence. The U.S counted them as their own country and in return gave the U.S complete control of a 10-mile strip.

    -The Roosevelt Corollary changed the Monroe Ductrine.
    -The Monroe Ductrine blocked further expansion of Europe in the western hemisphere, the Roosevelt Corollary went one step further.
    -Renounced interventionism and established his good neighbor policy for the western hemisphere.
