    French have been secretly sending weapons to the patriots, afterb their brutal beaten in the French and Indian War.

    British previosly retreated from from Boston moving the theater of the war, to the middle states.
  • Summer

    General William Howe and his brother Admiral Richard Howe joined forces and and sailed into the New York harbor with the largest British expiditionary ever assembled.
  • August

    Washington rallied 23000 men to New York's defense. They ended up being vastly outnumbered. The Battle of New York ended late August.
  • Fall

    British pushed Washington's army across the Delaware River into Pennsylvania.
  • Christmas

    Christmas
    Washington left for revenge off of the Delaware River.

    Next Day...
    Washington's men marched 9 miles through sleet and snow to get to Trenton. In a suprose attack, Americans killed 30 Britich soldiers, took 918 captives, and took 6 Heismen Cannons.

    General Howe began his campaign to seize the American capital at Philadelphia.

    General Howe's troop finally reached the capital after sailing from the Chesapeake Bay.

    Massed American troops finally surrounded Burgoyne at Saratoga, where he surrendered his battered army to General Gates.

    Albigense Waldo worked as a surgeon at Valley Forge outside Philadelphia, which served as the site for the Continental Armies camp during the winter.

    France recognized American Independence and signed an alliance with the American's.
  • March

    Cornwallis attacked Greene at Gulford Courthouse. Cornwallis won the battle, but that lost him a fourth of his troops.

    British changed battleing strategy and began to shift operations south.

    American troops began an amazong transformation in the middle of winter aty Valley Forge

    A British expidition easily took Savannah, Georgia

    A royal Governor once again commanded Georgie.

    General Henry Clinton sailed south with 8500 men. He replaced Howe in New York, along with ambitious Charles Cornwallis.

    Most of 1780

    Cornwallis generally succeeded. As the Redcoats advanced, they were joined by thousands of African Americans who had escaped from Patriot's slave owners.
  • May

    British captured Charlestown South Carolina, and marched off 5500 as prisioners of war.
  • August

    Cornwallis' army smashed American forces at Camden, South Carolina. Within 3 months British had established forts across teh states.
  • December

    Congress apppointed a rich Philadelphia merchant Robert Morris a superintendent of finance.
  • January

    When the forces meet at Cowpens, South Carolina. The British expected outnumbered Americans to flee, but the Continental Army fought back and forced Red Coats to surrender.
  • April

    Greene wrote a letter to Layfette asking fof help. Even though he weekend the British. Greene worried about fighting for the South.
  • September

    Morris and Solomon, a Jewish political refugee, raised funds for the Continental Army. On September 8th, the troops were finally paid in specie, or gold coins.
  • Victory at Yorktown

    York's troops outnumberd Cornwallis' troops more than a 2:1, and Cornwallis finally raised the white flag of surrender.

    A triumphant Washington, French Generals and there troops assembled to accept Britishes surrender.

    Peace Does Talk...

    Peace talks begin at Paris. Represntative's from 4 nations- United States, Great Britain, France and Spain- joined the negotiation, each looking out for its own countries interest.
  • INDEPENDENCE!

    The delagates signed the Treaty of Paris, which confirmed the U.S independence and set the boundaries of a new nation.
  • Unity or Inequality?

    Before 1804, most African American were enslaved, and even those who were free usually faced discrimination and poverty. But by 1804 many northern states have taken steps to outlaw slavery.
