  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    Banned settlements west of the Appalachian mountains. This frustrated colonists and made some start to resent the British rulers.
  • Sugar Act of 1764

    Sugar Act of 1764
    Reduced the tax on molasses from 6 pence per gallon to 3 pence. However this new tax also included a tax on sugar, certain wines, coffee, pimiento, cambric and printed calico. The Sugar Act was also heavily enforced with punishments for not complying. This heavily impacted the colonial economy and angered many colonists against the British.
  • Stamp Act of 1776

    Stamp Act of 1776
    Mandated a tax on all paper goods in the colonies. Colonists argued that they should only be taxed by their representatives and not people who they have not voted for. This lead to many protests and harassment of tax collectors who all resigned. This forced the British government to repeal the act in 1766.
  • The Quartering Act of 1765

    The Quartering Act of 1765
    The Quartering Act said that all colonies needed to provide funds to quarter British troops and to feed them. This made colonists ask the question, why does there need to be British troops in the colonies in peacetime. This also made the colonists angry at the fact that they might need to let a British soldier stay in their home for free.
  • The Declaratory Act

    The Declaratory Act
    Stated that the British government had total control over the colonies and they could not disobey. This angered the colonists to a great degree and really started feelings of a true full scale revolution.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    In October 1768 British troops begin to occupy Boston. As tensions grow there is a group of colonist who are throwing snowball at the british troops guarding the Boston Customs House. A fight between british troops and citizens occur and the British soldiers who were told not to fire ended up killing 5 colonists. This was the start of the true conflict between the colonists and British.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    The Boston Tea Party was political protest by the Sons of Liberty. It was caused by the Tea Act, which let the East India Company sell Tea from China without paying the same taxes as the colonists had to pay. This angered the colonists a very large degree, so on December 15, 1773, the Sons of Liberty dressed up as Native Americans and threw all of the tea from ships into the harbor and fled. The British government was absolutely furious and swiftly took action against the colonies...
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    The first Intolerable Act was called the Boston Port Act, this act closed the port of Boston entirely until the cost of the destroyed tea was payed. The second act was called the Massachusetts Government Act, this totally took away Massachusetts government, and basically said that the British government could control it entirely. This made many colonists from other colonies fear that their governments would be next to be disbanded. The fourth Intolerable Act was the second Quartering Act.
