    Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    The sugar act was the first tax on the parliament. It was to change the tax of sugar and molasses. It helped lower the tax of sugar and molasses but it also had a crackdown. Colonial smuggling started to spread mostly around New England. The colonists were getting upset about the law because their normal ways of business were getting disrupted. There were a lot of colonial protests against British interference.

    The Virginia governor sent soldiers to force the French to leave the Ohio River. The French rejected this and the French claimed the land between Lake Erie and the Ohio River. Washington moved west to build a fort and the French were there building a fort. Washington decided to move south to attempt to make a fort again. Later the French forces defeated Washington’s troops. The French ended up in debt. The French let Washington and his people go back to Virginia.

The colonists were scared that they would have to keep the British troops in their homes even though it did not say that in the Act. The Quartering Act then became a major colonial grievance.

    The Townshend Act made a tax on goods shipped to American colonies. This tax was put many items including, glass, paper, paint, lead and tea. This was to rasie revenue from colonists by tax on extermal trade. It allowed taxes in British colonies and plantations in America. Many colonists organized protests and they began boycotting the taxed goods.

    Parliament takes away all taxes except on tea. Colonists protested these taxes. The colonists circled around British soldiers and threw rocks and snow at them. Five people died because the soldiers panicked and started to shoot the colonists.

It helped the British East India Company and British officials choose which merchants were allowed to sell tea. Citizens objected the new tax and they threatened to prohibit ships carrying tea from docking. Colonists still continued to boycott tea.
