    On Christmas night 1776, Washington planned a surprise attack and defeated the Hessians to capture Trenton, New Jersey.

    American troops surrounded John Burgoyne at Saratoga where he surrendered on October 17, 1777.

    At the end of 1778, a British expedition easily took Savannah, Georgia.

    Washington's army- desperately low on food and supply, fought to stay alive at winter camp in Valley Forge.
