Rebecca Book Chapter 18 (note all the events happen in one day)

  • narrator finally sleeps 7am

    narrator stays up all night but finally goes to sleep in the morning (7am) it is broad daylight and it is obvious the sun is up. they realise max's bed is still empty. narrator hears the men below in the rose graden clearing away the tables and the chairs, narrator then drifts to sleep
  • wakes up 11am same day

    wakes up and starts drinking the cold tea on the tray next to her put there by Clarice. upon looking over at Maxim's empty bed she realises Maxim must have not come to bed at all last night as his pyjamas lay folded on his bed
  • notices a letter under the door 11:15am

    narrator thinks about the servents and if they have noticed that Maxim had not returned to bed the night before. she started wondering if they gossiped about it at breakfast that morning. and also thought about before and how Mrs Danvers was telling her that Max didn't actually love her, but instead he was just lonely. The fact was, Maxim had, and always will love Rebecca. then she noticed a note under her door.
  • reading the note and finally leaving bedroom 11:30am

    on the note she recognized the hand writing of Beatrice. the note said beatrice and her husband Giles went out to the cricket, and she realises they are probably back now. the narrator rumped Maxim's bed (to appear like he had slept there) then she bathed, dressed and went downstairs.
  • 11:35 downstairs and phone

    •when the narrators is downstairs she asks everyone but no one seems to know where Maxim is.
    •After freking out she confesses to Frank over the phone that Maxim never came to bed.
    •Frank tries to convince her that Maxim knows it wasn't intentional; he wants to explain more, but she doesn't want to hear it.
    •She knows Maxim loves Rebecca and that he thinks about her night and day. frank makes a shocked sound and says he has important things to say but the narrator hangs up
  • outside

    •Mrs. de Winter goes outside, where it's foggy and wet. She walks out toward the woods and looks up at the west wing. The shade is open in Rebecca's bedroom. Somebody's standing there.could it be Maxim?
    •Nope. False alarm. It's Mrs. Danvers: she's watching her mope around.
    the narractor goes and confronts Mrs Danvers because she thought Mrs Danvers heard the narrator crying but when she goes to Mrs Danvers, Mrs D is crying and the narractor realises Mrs D is just od and ill.
  • talking to Mrs Danvers

    •Mrs. de Winter wants to know if Mrs. Danvers is satisfied, if the old lady likes the way everything turned out.
    •The old housekeeper responds by asking her why she came to Manderley. She's not welcome and should've stayed away.
    •Keeping her composure, Mrs. de Winter says she loves Maxim.
    •Naturally, our narrator really doesn't want to hear all this. She asks Mrs. Danvers to stop.
    •but Mrs Danvers keeps going on about Rebecca
  • still in mrs danvers room

    •The stories continue: Rebecca and her cousin Jack Favell were "like a couple of wild cats" when they fought and played together. Favell and Rebecca never did what anybody told them to do.
    •Rebecca was also very strong. She could ride horses that even the boys were afraid of. She would whip a defiant horse bloody.
    •Our narrator seriously doesn't want to hear this. She tells Mrs. Danvers to be quiet and go to her room
    •Mrs. Danvers mocks her and asks if she's going to go tattle on her to Maxim
  • near death and more drama in mrs danvers room

    narrator asks the housekeeper (Mrs Danvers) to stop.
    Mrs. Danvers refuses. She comes toward her, telling her that she should leave Manderley. Mrs. de Winter backs up, getting closer to the window behind her. Maxim doesn't want her here anymore, she says. He wants to be here alone with Rebecca.
    •The two women are at the window. Then Mrs. Danvers pulls out the big guns: she tells Mrs. de Winter that the best thing she can do is jump out the window. to practically her death
  • on the window

    mrs danvers says Maxim will love Rebecca and only rebecca forever.
    •Mrs. de Winter holds tight to the window sill and thinks that it would be quick and painless if she jumped. She thinks about the idea of Maxim not loving her. Mrs. Danvers holds her arm tightly and tells her again that she should jump.Our narrator closes her eyes and starts forgetting her sadness.
    •Mrs. de Winter loosens her grip on the window sill, and boom. An explosion shakes the windows. Then another explosion.
  • ending

    •Mrs. Danvers thinks the explosions are rockets, probably shot off by a ship in distress nearby. They can hear people running on the terrace below them.
