  • Started Watching PBS Kids

    Started Watching PBS Kids
I was introduced to PBS Kids where I was instantly hooked to the show Between the Lions. It motivated me to read even at a young age. It also helped me learn reading concepts such as cliffhangers and how a library worked.
  • Partner Reading

    Partner Reading
I was introduced to partner reading in 2nd grade and I enjoyed that more than silent reading. It allowed me to hear words from someone else and helped me to become better at comprehending what I was reading.
  • Camp Learn-a-Lot

    Camp Learn-a-Lot
In 3rd grade, all the classes got together and participated in a camp themed learning activity that lasted a whole week. We read around a fake camp fire, created our own scary stories, and played reading games. This event made me really enjoy and look forward to reading because it was made to be fun.
  • Read to Kindergarten

    Read to Kindergarten
During Nevada Reading Week, older kids were able to go read to younger kids. I signed up to read to the kindergarten kids. This really boosted my confidence as a reader because those kids I read to thought I was so cool for being able to read "so many words", as they said.
  • Timed Reading

    Timed Reading
In 5th grade, it became a competition in my class to see how many words someone could read per minute. I was determined to read the most so I would go home and read everyday, I even read before school so I could improve. The whole class ended up improving their fluency scores so we got a pizza party. It made me realize that practice really does help.
  • Book Project

    Book Project
This was the first book project I had ever done in my life, and I was excited for it. I read the book A Corner of the Universe, which is still one of my favorite books. I made a diorama of a scene from the book and got a really good grade on it. My classmates also thought my project was cool and some of them went to read the book afterwards. It made me happy that people wanted to read the book I did my project on because I presented it so well.
  • History Project

    History Project
I had never hung out in the library to do a project until this one. My partner and I got assigned the KKK to do a presentation on so we decided to go look for books on it in the library. Since that project, I always go to the library to do research first, and not on the computers. There are so many books on so many subjects, it would be impossible to do bad on any project.
  • Harry Potter

    Harry Potter
I finally decided to get the Harry Potter books and see what everyone was saying was so good. These books reminded me how fun reading is. I thought I didn't need to read them because I had seen the movies, but the books are so much better. I laughed, cried, and even got mad at characters. Because of these books, I will never doubt how good a book is, even if they already have a movie on it.
  • World Literature

    World Literature
I took my first college world literature class where I learned more about Aesop's Fables. I knew the basic ones that every kid hears growing up such as The Tortoise and the Hare. Learning about other fables and lessons helped me as a substitute teacher when we started learning about fables in class.
  • Teaching a Reading Class

    Teaching a Reading Class
I became a coteacher in a 3rd grade reading class. This class was the lowest level of reading and required a lot of practice. I had to remind myself the ways I became a good reader and what motivated me so that I could inspire those kids to want to do the same,
