Phonics Books
Before kindergarten my parents would have me read phonics books. I thought they were pretty fun. -
Fluency Test
I remember doing these in elementary school and always being so nervous. I was afraid I wasn't reading fast enough and it was always quiet in the classroom so I felt like people were listening to me. -
Popcorn Reading
This always made me very nervous to read in front of the class and I believe affected my reading comprehension. Instead of following along on the page that was being read, I would read the next page to make sure I knew all the word and could read it smoothly if called on. -
Reading Intervention
In 5th grade I got pulled to a class during instruction to work on my reading and comprehension. This definitely affected my confidence with reading. -
Reading Groups
In 5th grade we were placed in a reading group and assigned chapter books to read throughout the year. Even being in a small group still made me nervous to read in front of my classmates. -
Read Aloud
In middle school I did not like to read aloud to the class. I feel like in all my english/reading classes they would always do this. It made me dislike reading in school and made me very anxious going to these classes. -
Reading Log
In 8th grade we were expected to read a certain number of books independently for the year and write a short summary for each book. I didn't mind reading independently and I was happy I got to choose my own books. I think this helped build a better relationship with reading personally. -
Socratic Seminar
Freshmen year of high school my english teacher would have us do these seminar. It was my least favorite thing because if we didn't speak we would get a zero. -
Independent Reading/ Group Reading
My last couple years of high school we did a lot of independent reading followed by questions we had to answer. Sometimes we could choose our own groups and read with them. This is when I started to enjoy reading more. -
College
I think my relationship with reading completely shifted when I went to college. I started reading more chapter books independently and learning new things. I like the freedom I had to choose what I wanted to read and not have to read it to anyone else. I also enjoyed the classes I was taking and didn't mind reading those textbooks.
