    The Japanese Kwangtung Army attacked Chinese in Manchuria. The Japanese Empire wanted to gain control over the whole province, in order to eventually take over all of East Asia. This was one of the causes of World War II.

    Mussolini (Italy) conquers Ethiopia
    Mussolini wanted to make a new Roman Empire. A Fascist slogan, “The Country Is Nothing Without Conquest.” made everything go into place. In October 1935, Mussolini invaded Ethiopia. The Ethiopians tried to fight back, but the Italian army overpowered the Ethiopian forces.

    The meeting took place in Munich.To avoid war and to avoid an alliance with Joseph Stalin and the Soviet Union, Neville Chamberlain and Edouard Daladier agreed that Germany could have Sudetenland. Hitler promised not to make any further demands in Europe. On September 29th, Adolf Hitler, Neville Chamberlain, Edouard Daladier and Benito Mussolini signed the Munich Agreement which gave the Sudetenland to Germany.

The Soviet Union sent arms and supplies to the Republicans.In March 1939, the Nationalist army took the Spanish capital of Madrid and ended the civil war. Franco kept control of the government after the war and ruled Spain until he died in 1975.

    On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland. The Polish army was defeated in weeks. German broke through Polish defenses along the border and went to Warsaw to attack. Warsaw surrendered to the Germans on September 27, 1939. Britain and France declared war on Germany. Poland was occupied by Germany until January 1945.
