    Boston Latin School, in Massachusetts, was the first public school in the United States. This paved the way for more schools to follow. There are now more then 98,000 public schools in the US. Before this time families had send their children to private schools.

    Horace Mann was very influential in shaping today’s education.The teacher training system that he helped produce is the cornerstone of education today. The board of education is still set up to ensure that school districts are responsive to the values, beliefs and priorities of their communities. The board is responsible for hiring qualified teachers that have completed the teacher training program.

    When the Supreme Court ruled unanimous that “separate but equal” was “inherently unequal”. They were showing that all people were equal. The practice of segregating public school children solely on the basis of race deprived minority children of equal educational opportunities. A large portion of Americans were now able to attend a decent school.
