Chuck Berry was interested in music from an early age. At age 10 he already participates in a local blues orchestra, as guitarist and singer. He gave his first public performance at Sumner High School. From 1944 to 1947, he was interned in a reformatory for armed robbery. He stole three stores in Kansas City and a car at gunpoint with some friends. In the reformatory he formed a quartet and practiced boxing.
