Causes of the American Revolution Timeline

  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    French and Indian war.
    French lost marking end of all french power in the United States. Even though they won the war it was worse for the colonies because they were in debt by 140,000,000. British unfairly decided to put taxes on everything and made it so they could not move west. Not a good effect on everyone.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    The Sugar Act, also known as the American Revenue Act was passed by British Parliament in 1764. They reduced the taxes so it would convince the colonies to stop smuggling and start paying it. Colonists were very angry because they had to pay an extra six pence per gallon.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The new tax was put upon all Colonists that made them pay a tax on every piece of printed paper they bought. Legal paper, licenses, newspapers, and even playing cards were taxed to the colonists. The colonists were very angry about this so they sent a letter to Britten saying that they can put taxes upon them if they didn´t agree.
  • Quartering Act of 1765

    Quartering Act of 1765
    The act that the British Parlamtn agreed on said that troops could only be quartered in barracks. If there wasn't enough space in barracks then they were to be quartered in public houses and inns. The colonies did not agree with it, they disputed the legality because it violated the the Bill of Rights. They were also not happy because they had to have soldiers in their house.
  • Townshend Acts

    Townshend Acts
    The Townshend Acts was taxes put on things that were put upon the colonists that were imported to America. One act placed tax on glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea imported to the colonies. They very very angered about this and started more boycotts.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    The Boston Massacre was a tragedy that struck on March 5th 1770. 10 colonist shot and 5 died. This was a fight between British Redcoats and American colonist. There was tension between the two ever since England sent over British soldiers to make sure they paid there heavy taxes that would pay off their debt.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    The Boston Tea Party was a rebellious act by the colonists, they stood up to the taxes and did something and protested. They disguised as African Americans, went onto a boat and threw taxed boxes of tea into the water, destroying the ENTIRE shipment of tea. This became a huge part of history because it was the fist little episode that lead to the American Revolution. GO COLONISTS!

    Intolerable Acts/Coercive Acts
    Intolerable Acts/Coercive Acts was punishment given to the American colonists for the Boston Tea Party. Four of the acts were there for the reason of the Boston Tea Party.
  • First Continental Congress

    First Continental Congress
    First Continental Congress was a meeting between 12 to 13 delegate colonists to discuses the Intolerable Acts/Coercive Acts. They had made plans to boycott, to receive some good without taxes and other plans. This was the first meeting of many, of one they would talk about and lead to the American Revolution.
