    Pregnancy

    9 months of pregnancy
  • Month 1

    Month 1
During the first month of pregnancy, an amniotic sac forms around the fertilized egg which helps support the fetus in the womb. The baby is the size of a pin head at this time.
  • Month 2

    Month 2
During the second month of pregnancy, the baby will have all of its major organs including the brain, lungs, liver, stomach and facial features such as, arms, legs, toes, and fingers. The baby is about an inch long at this time.
  • Month 3

    Month 3
During the third month of pregnancy, the baby is fully formed by the end of this month. The fetus already has fingernails and toenails, may start moving arms and legs (but still too small for the mother to feel anything), start opening and closing their mouth, and the umbilical cord is fully developed. The baby is 7 cm long.
  • Month 4

    Month 4
During the fourth month of pregnancy, the baby’s eyelashes and eyebrows begin to form, the baby can now hear voices and pass urine, the baby can now lift its head away from the body and the baby is now 5-6 inches long.
  • Month 5

    Month 5
The baby is now growing stronger in this stage. Teeth and hair are beginning to develop. The baby can now clench, grip things, and possibly suck its thumb. Fat is beginning to form under the baby’s skin. The baby is now 7 inches long.
  • Month 6

    Month 6
At 24 weeks the baby can now suck its thumb and and still produce fat under their skin, a baby girl will produce her eggs in this stage, the brain of the baby is growing at a rapid pace. The baby is now 11-14 inches long.
  • Month 7

    Month 7
The baby’s eyes can now open and close and sense light changes, the hearing abilities are getting better, the baby is practicing moving their arms and legs and the mother may feel painless contractions. The baby is now 16 inches long.
  • Month 8

    Month 8
The baby’s face is now smooth and fat is stored on the rest of the baby’s body. Most babies will have their head in a downward position during this month. The mother should be feeling strong fetal activity. At the end of this month the baby is 16-18 inches long.
  • Month 9

    Month 9
The baby is now fully developed and will gain weight at about an ounce a day. The baby is preparing for birth by settling itself in fetal position. The baby will continue to kick and make its way into the pelvis area which is also known as lightening. The baby should be at least 20 inches during this month.
  • Cleft Lip (Birth Defect #1)

    Cleft Lip (Birth Defect #1)
Cleft Lip- appears in 1 in 700 Caucasian babies and happens when the upper lip, hard palate, and soft palate are split apart early in fetal development. Cleft lip is curable, the treatment requires a minor surgery that leaves minimal scarring.
  • Spina Bifida (Birth Defect #2)

    Spina Bifida (Birth Defect #2)
Spina Bifida- occurs in 1 in 2,000 births of Caucasian or European babies, it is caused by a malformation of a neural tube which develops into the brain and the spine. Surgery is recommended to close the opening where the spine sticks out of the back.
  • Sickle Cell Disease (Birth Defect #3)

Sickle Cell Disease (Birth Defect #3)
Sickle Cell Disease- occurs in 1 in 625 births mostly affecting African American and Hispanic babies. Sickle cells are poorly formed cells that become destroyed by the liver and spleen which immediately results in anemia (blood loss). Treatments require medications/antibiotics, blood transfusions, and the most rare case would be to get a bone marrow transplant.
  • PKU (Birth Defect #4)

    PKU (Birth Defect #4)
PKU- an inherited metabolic disorder that occurs in 1 in 15,000 births (less common in African American/Jewish babies). Babies with PKU are missing a crucial enzyme that breaks down proteins. If not treated it could result in mental retardation. The only treatment that is possible is to have a restricted diet with a limited amount of protein.
  • Down Syndrome (Birth Defect #5)

    Down Syndrome (Birth Defect #5)
Down Syndrome- occurs in every 1 in 800 births overall. It is where the baby has a genetic disorder and produces extra genetic material than the average baby does. It can be diagnosed before birth and is incurable.
