Pre-Revolutionary Timeline

  • Declaratory Act

    The British governmentruled that Parliament's authority over the colonies is thesameas in Britain. They have the right to passlaws which are binding to the American colonies.
  • Boston Massacre

    Five colonists are shot and killed by British soldiers in Boston.
  • Tea Act

    The Tea Act was passed by British Parliament and banned colonists from buying tea from anyone other than the East India Company. This law did not impose any new taxes andwas put into place solely for the purpose of increasing revenue for theEast India Company.
  • Intolerable Acts

    The Intolerable Acts were passed by Parliament as a punishment to the colonies for their actions, namely the Boston Tea Party. The Intolerable Acts consisted of the Boston Port Act, the Massachusetts Government Act, the Administration of JusticeAct, and the Quartering Act.
  • 1st Continental Congress

    The1st Continental Congress wasset up by colonists in response to the Intolerable Acts passed by Congress. One of the primary accomplishments of the continental congress was leading a successful boycott of British goods.
  • 2nd Continental Congress

    The purpose of the 2nd Continental Congress was to draft the Declaration of Independence so that the American colonies could formally secede from England.
  • Olive Branch Petition

    The Olive Branch Petition was a document drafted by John Dickinson and signed by members of the 2nd Continental Congress. It addressed several grievances the colonists had with the British and asked for more diplomatic relations between the two places.
  • Thomas Paine's "Common Sense"

    Thomas Paine published a pamphlet urging the colonists to support gaining independence from Britain. This pamphlet was a landmark accomplishment because 75% of all colonists either read the pamphlet, or had it read to them.
  • Declaration of Independence

    The Declaration of Independence was a document signed by many influential Patriots. This document officially stated that colonists were seceding from Britain and no longer were going to accept being under British rule.
  • Treaty of Paris

    The Treaty of Paris ended the war between the British and the colonists. The British officially accepted the colonists' demand for independence.
