Pre-Civil War Time Line

  • Missouri Compromise

    A series of laws enacted in 1820 to maintain the balance of power between slave states and free states. This added to the Civil War because it seperated slave states from free states and the Northerners didn't like the fact that slavery was even allowed.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    An 1846 proposal that outlawed slavery in any territory gained from Mexico. This added to the civil war because it upset the Southerners in that they belived their slaves were property and they should be able to take thier property with them once again this did add to the tension between the North and South.
  • Compromise of 1850

    A series of Congressional laws intended to settle the major disagreements between free states and slave states. It added to the civil war because even after the laws were enacted the North still wasn't very happy over the issue of slavery which added to the tension between the North and the South.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    A novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe to express her stong feeling over the Fugitive Slave Act. This added to the Civil War
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    An 1854 law that estabilished the terriroties of Kansas and Nebraska and gave thier residents the right to decide whether to allow slavery This added to the Civil War because there was a lot of violence of the issue of slavery, it was alost like a war in kansas because of all the violence like the Sack of Lawerence and Pottawatomie Massacre
  • Sack of Lawrence

    An attack on the Capitol Building of Lawrence by proslave settlers in Kansas. This added to the Civil War because it caused much tension to grwo between the poslavery and antislavery settlers in Kansas.
  • Pottawatomie Massacre

    Because tension betwen proslavery and antislvery settlers in Kansas was so bad it led John Brown, and five others along with him, to murder five of his proslavery neighbors. This added to the Civil War because in the South John Brown was viewed as a terrorist and in the North a martyer which definiatly added to the tension between Norhterners and Southerners.
  • Dred Scott v. Sanford

    An 1856 Supreme Court case in which a slave, Dred Scott, sued for his freedom because he had been taken to live in territories where slavery was illegal; teh Court ruled against Scott It added to the Civil War because teh North were upset about the fact that we wasn't able to get free and the South was happy over this so once again it added to the tension between the two.
  • Election of 1850

    The canidates were Abraham Lincoln, Stephen A. Douglas, John Breckinridge, and John Bell-Abraham won the election This was a mojor part in the cause of the Civil War becasue the South did not want Lincoln to win hte presidency and when he won, the Souther States suceeded from the union.
  • South Carolina suceeded from the Union

    After the Election of 1860 the first state to suceed from the Union was South Carolina because Abraham Lincoln won the election. This added to the Civil War because this was basicly the main reason it started-one of the states left teh union
