Plate Techtonics theory

  • Abraham Ortelius

    Abraham Ortelius
Abraham Ortelius came up with the theory of continental drift. This theory stated that the Earth was once a large super-giant and with time it has shifted apart and became the way it is today. Ortelius supported his Hypothesis with his map the Thesaurus Geographicus which shows how all the continents fit together like a large jigsaw puzzle. The scientific community disagreed with his theory because he did not have enough evidence to support his theory and explain how the continents shifted.
  • Alfred Wegner

    Alfred Wegner
Wegner came up with a theory called continental drift, he said that the continents and once formed a super continent called Pangaea. The evidence that he used was the similar coast lines between countries and that there were the same types of organisms and rocks on countries that are now separated by oceans in Africa, South America, India and Antartica . The scientific community did not agree with this theory because Alfred Wegner could not explain what caused the continents to actually move.
  • Alex du Toit

    Alex du Toit
Du Toit was the first scientist to propose the theory of two original supercontinents separated by one ocean. His evidence was the way the continents were shaped. the scientific community disagreed with him because of his lack of evidence
  • Henry Hess

    Henry Hess
Henry Hess came up with the theory that the sea floor is spreading. The mid ocean ridge and flat topped mountains called guyots under the sea were his evidence. This theory was not accepted by the scientific community however it did provide an explanation to how continents move.
  • Frederick J Vine and Drummord Holy

Frederick J Vine and Drummord Holy
Frederick J. Vine and Drummond Holy created the theory that the earths magnetic field reverses over time due to metals that come up from the mantle through the mid ocean ridges. The evidence that they had was patterns on the sea floor near the ridge. The scientific community did not agree with this theory because there was not enough evidence to support this theory.
  • Lawrence Morley

    Lawrence Morley
Lawrence Morley proposed the theory that rocks on the ocean floor showed the direction of earths magnetic field. His evidence came from the patterns on the sea floor. Most people did not agree with him because this idea was so crazy and hadn't been really researched and the evidence provided wasn't enough.
  • W. Jason Morgan

    W. Jason Morgan
Morgan hypothesized crust consists of many different sections that are separated by boundaries. The evidence found was from his studies and findings in the navy and where noticed large lines on the ocean floor. This theory has been accepted by the scientific community because we now have the technology to actually prove this. Also, large amounts of evidence have proved this.
  • Arthur Holmes

    Arthur Holmes
Convection From The Mantle was the theory made by Arthur Holmes. It stated that convection from the mantle makes the continents to drift. This provides evidence for the theories of Ortelius and Wegner and how the continents shifted from one supergiant. The scientific community disagreed with this theory because he would need much more evidence and data to prove his theory than he would of had access to at the time, meaning that there was no way to prove that there was convection from the mantle
