Before Imperialism
The Philippines was claimed by Spain by Ferdinand Magellan. The Philippines were dominated by a Roman Catholic society. Under the rule of the spanish the Philippines had a strong central government. Although under the rule of the spanish numerous uprisings occured. -

The Uprising of 1898
Led by Emilio Aguinaldo the Filipinos started a rebellion which turned into a war that would last for less than a year. -
The Americans come to help?
On June 12th 1898 America aids the Fillopinos in the rebellion against the spanish. On the same day Alguinaldo declared independence. But following the victory against the spanish the Americans started to occupie the Philippines. -
America Takes Over
Spain signed over the Philippines to America in the treaty of Paris, this ended the war. -
The Philippines try to resist
The thought of another country ruling the Philippines again angered them, led still by new presisdent Alguinaldo uprisings started happening again. -
Savages?
As the Americans started pouring in to try and take over the Philippines the newspaper in the U.S depicted the Fillipinos as savages and under developed people while the Fillipinos were christian hard working people. -
It was no use
In the year 1901 Alguinaldo was captured and forced to swear allegiance to America, from that point the resistances died out. -
Imperialism Creeps up on the Philippines
The starting of 1902 America debated on using imperialism on the Philippines arguing that in the Philippines awaited new inverstments and wealth and America didn't want to lose it to Japan or Germany, but the islands were 6,000 miles away from the Pacific Ocean. -
Difficulties in Annexing the Philippines
There were many problems with using imperialism on the Philippines for staters the philippines included 7,100 islands which held 7.5 million people with many different ethnic groups and 87 languages making imperialism very hard. -
The Fillipino American war
starting in 1903 the Fillipinos eager to defend their independence were backed up by many islanders so U.S troops ended up killing Fillipino soldiers and common people, in total of 220,ooo Fillipinos died and it took 63,000 U.S troops to take control of the nation. -
Phillipines during WWI
Japan launched a suprise assault ten hours after the pearl harbor bombing the Philippines were assaulted bombings followed with ground troops landing on the coast of Manilla. -
America Lets go
In 1946 America finally decides to grant the Phillippines there freedom and Independence after all the bloodshed and arguing,
