In response to the Fugtive Slave act, the North enacts and passes personel liberty laws. This found loopholes in the fugtive slave act and exploited them. For example, state jails could not be used to house these prisoners and proof of ownership had to be presented to take the slave. This made it hard to retrive a slave. South is angred by this.

Dred Scott (a slave) sued for freedom. The court said that he was the property of his owner and therefore could not be free. This furthers anti-slavery forces cause.

Terry (pro- slavery) attacked Broderick (California State Senator) for his anti-slavery believes. Broderick challenges Terry to a duel. While taking pases before the count, Brodericks gun misfired into the dirt. Terry aims and shoots Broderick in the chest. Broderick later dies from his injuries. He is now seen as a martyer throught the Union. Abonishlionists are now angered by this violence

President Lincoln was elected. His beliefe was that every man had the right to be free, including blacks. This angered the south. A few months later South Carolina sucesseds.
