    Judith Heumann
    Judith Heumann is a disibility rights activist. Her work produced significant contributions since the 70s to the development of human rights legislation and policies helping people with disabilities. At eighteen months she contracted Polio, which left her in a wheelchair. She faced many prejudices growing up. The school refused to allow her to attend, they called her a fire hazard. Her mother had to fight pretty hard for her to be able to attend school in fourth grade.

    The U.S. Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education ruled that separate schools for black and white children was unconstitutional. Which eventually became a major inspiration to the disability rights movement.
    It laid the foundation for the the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

    Edward Verne Roberts fights to get support from UC Berkeley
    Edward started fighting for his rights when he decided that his 800lb iron lung that he had to sleep in was not satisfactory. This started the first student-led fight for better services for students with disabilities.
  • National Technical Institute for the Deaf

    National Technical Institute for the Deaf
    Congress established the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at the Rochester Institute of Technology New York. It is the first and largest technological college in the world for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

    Juduth Heumann and her friends founded Disabled in Action. Which is an organization that focused on protection of people with disabilities under civil rights laws. Their goal is to end discrimination against all people with disibilities.

    Makes it illegal for fedrally funded services to discriminate against the disabled. Schools and Medical facilities were a large focus because it is really important for these places to assist all because all people need to use these.

    Ensures that students with disibilities are provided with free appropirate public education that suits their needs. Their goal is to provide children with disabilities the same opportunity for education as those who do not have disabilities. Before this, about one million disabled children were getting no education from public schools

    The Disibilites movement today focuses on getting more socially accepted. This meaning not getting strange looks wherever they go and instead maybe getting asked for help or just treated like a human being. They also push towards getting handicap accessable pools, malls, and buildings in general. This is even seen in Edina with the implementation of a lift for wheelchair accessable pools at South View Middle School
