    Edward Roberts was a leader for the people with disabilities movement. He contracted polio at the age of 14 and lost all movement except in two fingers. He would have to use a breathing machine the rest of his life which would cause trouble for him at UC Berkeley. He was the first student with severe disabilities to attend UC Berkeley. In 1972, he would create the Center for Independent Living. Finally, in 1981, he created World Institute on Disability (WID) which he would run until his death.

    Roberts wanted to acquire a better education for himself and therefore wanted to go UC Berkeley. His application was accepted but when the administration discovered his disability he was refused admittance to the college on the grounds that his equipment wouldn’t fit in/ be supported by the floor. Roberts challenged the administration’s choice, and he eventually won and was allowed to attend classes.

  • Rehabiltation act of 1973

    The Rehabilitation Act prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in programs conducted by federal agencies, in programs receiving federal financial assistance, in federal employment, and in the employment practices of federal contractors.

    The ACCD was created in 1975 and was a coalition of local, state, and national organizations that worked in collaboration for the betterment of people with disabilities. In 1977, the ACCD stage sit ins in 10 major cities in order to push the enforcement of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation act of 1973. The most notable being the San Francisco demonstration. It lasted 25 days and gained national attention.

  • Americans with disabilities act of 1990
