During 1853 however, “Black ships” went to japan to trade, terrified, the japanese signed am open trade treaty with the U.S. Then soon after with Great Britain, Russia, France, and Holland.

    In 1860, the ruling shogun was overthrown, and a 15-year-old emperor by the name of meiji took the throne. During his the time, Japan had a new political system with a parliament and a constitution, a modern army and navy, and growing industries. European nations seized huge territories of Asia, To avoid being controlled, japan tried to adopt western culture and technology to make japan strong.

With no natural resources, they had t import oil, steel, and other commodities to keep its industry and military forces alive. But they needed to import goods to get them, this was really difficult because the U.S. raised the tariff. The other way to get raw materials was to increase the amount of territory under their control.

During the 1800’s Americans argued that that the U.S. should gain colonies overseas. 1898, The U.S. had a brief war with spain. The U.S. won and got Spain's Pacific possessions, Including the Philippine Islands.
