Pause and Reflect: Significant Literacy Experiences - Ashlyn Hill

  • First Books

Books purchased by my parents, relatives and friends that decorated my nursery and were waiting on my arrival. Although I have no memory, I am told that I enjoyed being read to from the beginning.
  • Period: to

    My literacy timespan

The impact of books and literacy on my life from the beginning to the present.
  • Preschool starts

A new room full of books and activities. Circle time is a new concept. Work time to explore books and play with letters and numbers on my own is also a new concept. I love stories and books and now I have even more people to read to me.
  • Kindergarten Begins

Moving from pre-school to big kid's school. This is where my struggles with reading started to be noticed. But I still loved hearing stories and being read to, often for long periods at a time.
  • Move to public school from Montessori School (3rd grade)

My reading issues worsened from K-2, public school had the ability to test and support me, where a private school couldn't. I met my first reading tutor in school and also had a private tutor
  • Middle School - It's all about fitting in

Fitting in during the middle school years is the primary goal. That includes reading what is popular for that age. I discovered audio books to support my thirst for reading when you have a reading disability.
  • Movies - Some were books first?

Realizing some of my favor movies actually were books first, made me want to read those book and in doing so, I found so many details that were glossed over or omitted from the movie. Especially true for the Harry Potter series.
  • High School - Reading to Learn

Reading something because you have to is so different from reading what you want. This concept was introduced in middle school but is the central focus of high school and beyond. History and government can be especially dry reading.
  • "The Fault in Our Stars" - Not all great books have a happily everafter

Read this book and a couple years later would see the movie based on it. It moved me and stayed with me.
  • Reading - Continuing Education and a Lifetime Skill

College, work, pleasure... so many reasons to read and to learn
  • The Digital Age is Amazing

Using a Kindle,Tablet or laptop and downloading digital content not only saves physical space and pounds of extra weight in your backpack but can provide the kind of assistance some people may need (i.e. those with sight or reading disabilities). Great for textbooks, novels, magazines or any other readable material.
  • Making time for reading

Making time for reading can become a chore in the adult world of responsibility and real life. But it can also be a great stress reliever. Rereading books from my youth has been a guilty pleasure. Reading a book before I see the film is also a new favorite.
