    Discovering Panama

    The Spanish explorer, Vasco Nunez de Balboa, discovered Panama and claimed the land for Ferdinand who was their King at that time.

    Panama Under Spanish Rule

    Panama was under the Spanish rule for almost 300 years.
  • Raids

    Raids

    Sir Francis Drake invaded Panama. The only way to stop them was for Spain to create an alliance with them which guaranteed their freedom in exchange for military support.

  • Burning of the City

    Henry Morgan sacked and burned Panama City, which was the second most important city in the Spanish New World.

  • Independence From Spain

    Panama broke away from Spain in the year of 1821.

  • Railroad

    The first Panama railroad was built to stretch from the Atlantic ocean to the Pacific ocean.

  • Building the Canal

    The building of the Canal started in 1881. The US helped in some of the construction.
